Matthew joined the Ancient History graduate cohort in the Fall of 2020. He received his B.A. in Classical Studies in 2017 from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Before coming to Penn, Matthew taught Ancient Greek and Latin at both the Groton School and Taft School. During those three years teaching high school, Matthew designed classes that not only translated but also explored cultural themes from Classical authors such as Arrian’s Anabasis and Sallust’s Bellum Iugurthinum. Although Matthew has a wide range of research pursuits, he is particularly interested in how elite identity was constructed and expressed within the Hellenistic world – especially the Seleucid Empire. While at Penn, Matthew is looking forward to studying methodological approaches in archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics.
