Conflict and instability in Syria and Iraq have tremendously impacted cultural heritage. Thousands of heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed. Acts of iconoclasm, theft, and archaeological looting have exacted a grievous toll on cultural property, art, and antiquities. This presentation reviews some of the actions taken by the international community to assist Syrians and Iraqis in safeguarding cultural memory, identity, diversity, and freedom of expression.
