Drawing on my current research in Northwest Greece and the Ionian islands, this lecture reflects on current debates about the roles of sanctuaries in Archaic to Hellenistic Greece - on the physical form of cult places, their siting in the landscape, their economic implications, and the beliefs, actions, and relationships that we read at each. Resting primarily on material data, I consider the challenges and potential contribution of close reading of the archaeological record with particular reference to ongoing projects in the Ionian islands.
Every spring, the Graduate Group in Ancient History at Penn hosts a week-long visit by a distinguished ancient historian, made possible by a gift by Walter Woodburn Hyde (1870-1966, Professor of Greek and Ancient History at Penn 1910-1940). During their stay, the Hyde Visitor teaches a graduate seminar, meets with graduate students individually and in smaller groups, and delivers the formal Hyde Lecture. This year, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Catherine Morgan, Professor of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Oxford and Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College.
