02/17 Joseph Lowry (Penn): "Aspects of Qur’anic Law-making"

Thursday, 17 February 2022 - 6:30 PM

Virtual, Zoom
Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins (PSCO)

This talk will provide a broad survey of the Qur'an's legal materials. Beginning with an overview of older and some more recent scholarship, the presentation will focus on the various uses that the Qur'an makes of law and legal ideas, including positive legislation, narrative enhancement, interpretation of Biblical traditions, and as a means for elaborating Qur'anic theology.

This year, the meetings of Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins will feature a variety of scholars from different disciplines who will discuss the year’s theme, Law and Justice in Antiquity. The talks will explore a broad range of topics, including literary representations of law, incarceration practices, among others. All of this year’s meetings (for a full schedule, please visit https://web.sas.upenn.edu/psco/schedule/) will be conducted remotely via Zoom.
