Thursday, February 3, 2022 - 4:45pm to 6:15pm

402 Cohen Hall and on Zoom, link below

Speaker: Clifford Ando, David B. and Clara E. Stern Distinguished Service Professor, University of Chicago

Title: "Roman law and republican domination"

Abstract: The surviving texts of Roman legislation derive from contexts across length and breadth of the Roman empire, and yet rarely have been studied as evidence for the distinctive forms of domination exercised by Rome over others, and by Romanizing elites over others still further afield.  The lecture launches a project to integrate the history of law with the history of republican empire.
